今日は「モダンさをスタイリングに取り入れる」と言うテーマを掲げて、コラムをお送りしたいと思います。
Today, I would like to write a column on the theme of “How to add modernity to your attire”. And in this article, I consider about what is modernity and how to incorporate it into attire.
- 言葉の定義の難しさ/Difficulty in defining words
先日、インスタグラムにおいて以下のような質問を頂きました。
The other day, I got the following question on my Instagram.
「あなたの装いのテーマはモダンクラシックですが、モダンとはどのような意味で、どうすればベーシックなスーツやジャケパンスタイルにモダンさを取り入れることが出来ますか？」
“I know your theme of attire is modern classic, and what does modern mean and how can I add it to my basic suit or jacket style?”
頂いたご質問を整理すると、問われている内容は2つ。
I have two questions that are asked.
1.モダンさの意味（定義）/The meaning of modernity (definition)
2.モダンさを装いに取り入れる方法 /How to add modernity to attire
ファッションにおける「モダンさ」とは「現代的」、または「都会的」と言う意味だと解説されることが多い言葉です。
Modernity in fashion is often described as meaning “modern” or “urban.”
ただし、言葉を定義することは非常に難しいと思っています。
However, I find it very difficult to define words.
例えば、「車」と言う言葉を聞いた際に、あなたはどんな車をイメージされるでしょうか。
For example, what kind of car do you think of when you hear the word “car”?
モータースポーツが好きな方であればスポーツカーを思い浮かべると思いますし、アウトドアが好きな方であれば、SUVを思い浮かべる方もいると思います。
If you like motor sports, you will think of a sports car, and if you like the outdoors, you might think of SUV.
また、「青」と言う色を聞いた際に、全く同じ色を思い浮かべることは稀だと思います。それは日本のようなに自然が豊かで四季がある自然環境に住んでいる人と、海のない、砂漠のような場所に住んでいる方では、「青」と言う色の定義であったとしても異なる可能性があるのです。事実、日本における伝統色としての「青」は一説によると60種類以上も存在すると言われているくらいですから、同じ日本人であったとしても、全く同じ「青」色をイメージするのは不可能です。
Also, when you hear the color “blue”, I think it’s rare for everyone to think of the exact same color. As for people who live in a natural environment with rich nature and four seasons like Japan, and those who live in places like the desert without the sea and seasons, the definition of the color “blue” can also be different. In fact, according to one theory, it is said that there are more than 60 types of “blue” as a traditional color in Japan, so it is impossible for even the same Japanese to imagine the exact same “blue” color.
このように、言葉の定義と言うのは住んでいる場所の自然環境や文化、歴史、教育などによって、差異が発生するのです。
In this way, the definition of the word makes a difference depending on the natural environment, culture, history, and education of the place where one lives.
目に見える物を表す言葉であっても認識に差異が発生するのですから、「モダン」のように目に見ることの出来ない言葉の認識を合わせることは、より困難であることは言うまでもありません。
It goes without saying that it is more difficult to match the recognition of invisible words such as “modern” because even the words that represent the visible things can make a difference in recognition.
- モダンを定義する/Define modern
これらを踏まえた上で、私自身の「モダン」をあえて定義してみたいと思います。最も簡単な方法は言葉を置き換えてみると言うことだと思うのですが、数ある言葉の中から私が考える「モダン」を表現するものを1つ選ぶのであれば「洗練された」と言う言葉が最適だと感じています。
Based on these, I would like to dare to define my own “modern”. I think the easiest way is to try replacing the words, but if I choose one word in the many words that expresses “modern”, I think “sophisticated” is most suitable word.
私は「洗練された」と言う言葉に対して、無駄な物をそぎ落として残った、本質的な美しさと言ったようなイメージを持っています。
I have the image that the word “sophisticated” is the essential beauty that was left after scraping away unnecessary things.
なぜ「洗練された」と言う言葉にそのようなイメージを持つようになったのか、それを詳細にご説明するのは難しいのですが、私の人生において出会ってきたモノ、経験したことなどが複雑に絡みあい、現時点ではそのように表現することが個人的にしっくり来ていると言うことだと考えています。
It is difficult to explain in detail why I’ve came to have such an image in the word “sophisticated”. I think that things that I have come across in my life, things that I have experienced, are intricately entwined, and that expressing in that way is personally appropriate at the moment.
そして私が今考える「モダン」さ、そして「洗練された」スタイルを具現化したものが、まさに私がインスタグラムに投稿しているようなスタイリングになります。
And the realization of the “modern” and “sophisticated” style that I think of now is the styling that I am posting on Instagram.
なお、ここで重要なことは、全ての人が私と同じ「モダンさ」の定義を持つべきだと言うことではなく、それぞれの個々人が独自の「モダンさ」を定義することです。
It’s important to note here that not everyone should have exactly the same definition of “modernity” as I do, but each person should define their own “modernity”.
上述した通り、個々人の経験、感性等によって「モダンさ」の定義が異なることは当然です。そして、自分独自の定義を持つことが、装いに個性を持たせる上で重要です。
As mentioned above, it is natural that the definition of “modernity” varies depending on the individual experience and sensitivity. And having your own definition is important for personalizing your attire.
人と異なると言うこと。それは、その違いこそが、その人独自の価値であることを意味します。
To be different from other person means that the person has original value.
- モダンさを装いに取り入れる / How to incorporate it into attire
では、それぞれの「モダン」を定義したら、後はそれをどのように装いに取り入れるのか、について考えたいと思います。
Now that we have each “modern” defined, let’s think about how to incorporate it into our attire.
その答えは、とてもシンプルです。自分が「モダンさ」を感じるアイテムを意識して選び、組み合わせてコーディネートするだけです。
The answer is very simple. All you have to do is select items that you feel are “modern” and combine them to coordinate.
装いは単独のアイテムのみでは成立しません。装いはいくつかのアイテムを組み合わせて成立するものあり、その雰囲気は、用いた個々のアイテムが積み重なって出来上がるものだと考えています。
An attire cannot be established with only one item. It is a combination of several items, and I think that the atmosphere is created by stacking the individual items used.
つまり、カジュアルなアイテムを用いて出来上がるコーディネートはドレッシーな雰囲気にはなり得ませんし、逆にドレッシーなアイテムを用いて出来上がるのはドレッシーな装いであり、カジュアルな装いではないのです。
In other words, the coordination created with casual items cannot be dressy, and the coordination created with dressy items are dressy and not casual.
冒頭で日本においては「青」が60種類以上も存在したと言う話をしましたが、注目すべきことは60種類と言う数の多さではなく、昔の日本人が「青」の微妙な違いを認識していたと言う事実です。
At the beginning, I said that there were more than 60 types of “blue” in Japan. What is noteworthy is not the number of it, but the fact that old Japanese were aware of the difference the color.
世の中には星の数ほどのブランドがジャケット、シャツ等を提案していますが、それぞれの持っているスタイル、雰囲気の持つ些細な違いを認識し、自分好みのスタイルを持つアイテムを選ぶことが大切です。
There are many brands that suggest jackets, shirts, etc., but it is important to recognize the slight differences in their styles and atmospheres. Then, select the item with the atmosphere and style you like.
そしてその違いは、アイテムと真摯に向き合い、違いを意識して、経験を重ねることで認識できるようになるものだと私は考えています。
And I think that the difference can be recognized by facing the fashion items seriously, recognizing the difference, and accumulating experience.
モダンさを装いに取り入れたい方は自分なりの「モダンさ」の定義をし、その定義に適合するアイテムを選んでコーディネートをしてください。そうすれば、きっとモダンさのあるスタイリングが出来るようになると思います。
If you want to incorporate modernity into your attire, make your own definition of “modernity” and select items that match that definition to coordinate. If you do so, I’m sure that you will be able to do modern styling.
